Matthews is founded as a US Royal dealer by Fred Matthews in Appleton on College Avenue. Soon the business transitions to the Goodyear flag and is later sold to Leon Gunderson.

Dennis Rezner, a former Goodyear employee and patriarch of the current owners—the Rezner family—purchases the business.

Matthews’ second location—this one located on Union Street in Waupaca, is opened.

A third location quickly follows with the opening of a store on Appleton Road in Menasha.

Matthews purchases the current Fond du Lac location, located on West Johnson Street, from Goodyear.

1998
A former Champion Auto store is purchased on Oneida Street in Green Bay and becomes Matthews’ fifth and newest outlet.

Matthews expands with the opening of the sixth store—the new Appleton East location—on Van Roy Road.

To better meet the needs of Matthews’ significant commercial customer base, the Matthews Commercial Tire Center is opened on Bluemound Road in Appleton.

The Rezner family continues to own and operate Matthews with the same commitment and dedication to serving customers. Today, General Manager Trevor Rezner and Controller Debbie Duesing continue their father’s proud tradition.
