Have had alot of work on both of our vehicles in the last 15 years. In the last 8 months have had tires, brakes, rotors and struts and oil changes. They get us in fast and out. John is honest and professional in giving us estimates and getting the work done correctly. Tom, David and Michael always help make the appointments at the front desk and always friendly and accommodating. I recommend Matthew's tire very highly.

I personally have not had great luck with mechanics, countless times have I found myself being overcharge for bad work. I been a customer with them for a year no issues I had brakes tires and oil change done with them, oil changes is cheaper then average , brakes average price and tires were slightly more expensive then average. What I appreciate most is that the do not try and sell me on repairs I don’t need.

I did my own brake job, however on the last rear brake the caliper slide bolt was locked and rusted. Of course it broke off because that is what happens when I attempt things that should be done by pros. I was able to get it to Matthews on Sunday night and they fixed it on Monday for me which was very kind and did it for a great price. Great crew and very pleased with John for replacing the caliper and checking over the rest of my Jeep. Thank you Matthews !!

Signs It’s Time for Brake Pad Replacement in Green Bay

Wondering if your brake pads are worn out or nearing the end of their lifespan? These common warning signs may mean it’s time for an inspection.

  • Squealing, screeching or grinding sounds when you apply the brakes
  • Longer stopping time or your vehicle feels slow to respond
  • Brake pedal feels loose or unusually soft when pressing down
  • Vibrations or pulsing during braking, especially at higher speeds
  • Brake system warning light illuminated on your dashboard

You can also visually check your pads. If they’re thinner than 1/8 inch (around 3–4 mm), it’s best to replace them soon.

At Matthews Tire in Green Bay, we’ll inspect your brakes thoroughly and walk you through what’s safe, what’s needed and what can wait. No upsells, just honest, expert service to help you stay safe on the road.

How Often Do Brake Pads Need Replacing?

Brake pads generally need replacement between 30,000 and 70,000 miles, depending on where and how you drive. Stop-and-go traffic, frequent braking and hilly roads can all accelerate wear.

If you hear brake noise, feel delayed braking response or notice your pads are looking thin, it’s smart to have them inspected. A good rule: if they’re under 1/8 inch thick, it’s time for new ones.

At Matthews Tire in Green Bay, we inspect your brake components thoroughly and help you stay ahead of wear and tear. By planning ahead, you avoid surprises and keep your vehicle safe, reliable and road-ready.

Frequently Asked Brake Repair Questions

How long does brake pad replacement take at your Green Bay shop?
Most brake pad replacements take around 30 minutes to an hour. If there are issues like worn calipers or the rotors need to be resurfaced or replaced, it could take closer to 1–2 hours. Our shop is located on Oneida Street, so it’s easy to drop your vehicle off and go shopping at Bay Park Square, catch a movie at Marcus Bay Park Cinema or visit the National Railroad Museum.
Is there anything about driving in Green Bay that causes faster brake wear?
Yes, stop-and-go traffic on roads like Mason Street or Military Avenue can wear your brakes out more quickly. This is especially true near high-traffic intersections like Main Street and Mason Street or the I-41 and West Mason Street roundabout, both known for frequent congestion and crashes. Shopping areas like Bay Park Square, the Ashland Avenue and Walnut Street intersection and the stadium district on game days also require more braking, leading to faster pad wear over time. Additionally, navigating the Leo Frigo Memorial Bridge during heavy traffic or poor weather can contribute to increased brake use due to its steep grade and traffic volume.
Do you service brake pads for electric or hybrid cars in Green Bay?
We do. We’ve worked on everything from Teslas to Toyota hybrids for Green Bay drivers. Even though hybrids use regenerative braking, they still rely on traditional brake pads that eventually need replacement.
Is it a good idea to replace brake pads before winter driving in Green Bay?
Definitely. With Green Bay’s long winters and heavy salt use, worn brake pads can become a problem fast. Having fresh pads gives you better stopping power when driving near slick intersections or getting on and off Highway 41 during icy conditions.
How do you know if you need brake pads replaced in Green Bay’s winter conditions?
Winter weather around Green Bay, especially the snow, salt and cold, can take a toll on your brakes. If you notice squeaking, grinding or it’s taking longer to stop, it’s worth getting them checked out before the roads get worse.
How close are you to Green Bay neighborhoods like De Pere, Allouez or Hobart for brake repair?
We’re conveniently located in Green Bay, just minutes from De Pere, Allouez, Bellevue, Hobart and other nearby neighborhoods. Whether you’re coming from the west side near Lambeau Field and Lombardi Avenue, or the east side along Main Street or Monroe Avenue, our shop is easy to reach. We’re also close to Highway 41 and Highway 172, making it convenient for drivers from De Pere, Howard and Bellevue. With local landmarks like Bay Park Square, the Resch Center and Titletown nearby, you’ll have plenty of options to explore or run errands while we take care of your brake repair.
Is your shop close to public transportation if I leave my car for brake repair?
Yes, our Green Bay location is served by Green Bay Metro Transit. Several bus routes run near major roads like Mason Street, Military Avenue and Oneida Street. This makes it easy to catch a ride while we work on your car. Whether you’re heading downtown, to Bay Park Square or running errands around the stadium district, public transportation offers a convenient way to get around without missing a beat.
